Finding a Focus

Is aiming for everyone the reason you're inspiring no one?

Trying to appeal to everyone is a surefire way to create something uninspiring. When we plan for the “average” student, we end up with activities that are bland—acceptable to all, but exciting to none.

If you had to plan just one activity for an entire group, you might aim for the middle. But imagine designing an activity for just five students in your class. That activity would look completely different from the one you’d create for a group of thirty.

This is why we need adaptable activities—ones that can shift to meet the needs of specific psychographic groups. Activities where you can adjust the number of players, the equipment, or the goals to suit the unique worldviews of your students.

Start by selecting an activity to teach the skills you need to cover. Then, create a tailored adaptation—one that tells a story that resonates with those five students who will benefit most from it.

By focusing on smaller groups, we move away from trying to please everyone and instead create meaningful experiences that genuinely engage and excite.
