The start of the school year is more than just a calendar date โ itโs the ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐ผ๐ป every PE teacher gets handed once a year.
In sport, ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ-๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ป is where everything is built: ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐บ ๐ฐ๐๐น๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ, ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐, ๐ณ๐ถ๐๐ป๐ฒ๐๐, and the ๐ด๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐น๐ฎ๐ป. Miss that window, and the season becomes a game of catch-up. The same is true for your PE program.
In those first few weeks, students are deciding โ often subconsciously โ what your lessons will feel like, how much effort is โnormal,โ and whatโs worth striving for. This is the perfect moment to ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ, ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฟ, and ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ฏ๐๐-๐ถ๐ป for the year ahead.
๐๐ถ๐ด๐ต-๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐ donโt waste pre-season running the same sessions they could do mid-year. They deliberately plan for:
๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฝ๐๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ฒ โ athletes know exactly whatโs expected of them.
๐๐ถ๐ด๐ต ๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ โ so thereโs no slow build-up.
๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ถ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฐ๐๐น๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ โ so discipline and focus become automatic.
๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฃ๐, that means using those early lessons to:
๐๐ป๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐ฒ your vision for the year and why it matters.
๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ clear expectations for effort, behaviour, and progress.
๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐น๐ ๐๐ถ๐ป โ an activity, skill, or game that makes them feel capable and excited to return.
Opportunities like this donโt come around every week. Once the term is in full swing, momentum takes over โ for better or worse. Starting well doesnโt just make your life easier, it ๐ฏ๐๐ถ๐น๐ฑ๐ ๐ฎ ๐ณ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป for everything that follows.
๐ฆ๐ผ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒโ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ: treat your first week back like an elite coach treats pre-season. And watch how it transforms the rest of your year.
